In the United States, football is a sport that is followed by millions of fans. They live to see the next championship, they support their favorite players in every possible way, and they watch every game, if not at the stadium, then on TV. One of the most famous footballs in football history is being put up for auction.
1958 was a great year for sports and the NFL Championship was more than spectacular. Some still know it as “the Greatest Game Ever Played”, and the match between the Baltimore Colts and the New York Giants will be forever remembered. The team was led by QB Johnny Unitas. He sent the ball to Billy Berry who made the winning touchdown. The 15 yard touchdown was followed by the sudden death overtime conversion kick that sent the ball directly into the arms of a fan in the stands.
Since 1958, the football signed by Johnny Unitas has had various owners and now it is being made available at auction by Huggins and Scott Auctions in Maryland. Fans will be able to place their bid until February 11, 2016. How much will this football bring? According to Bill Huggings, it could fetch between $40,000 and $75,000. This football has special significance in that it was the Baltimore Colt’s first NFL championship, and the first overtime victory in NFL history.
