He penciled the very first basketball rulebook and set up the basketball program at the University of Kansas. The principle of basketball was born from Naismith's school days where he played a simple youngster's game referred to as duck-on-a-rock outside his one-room schoolhouse. To develop a brand-new sporting activity, Naismith looked for motivation from outdoor sporting activities like soccer, lacrosse, and also football, and also tried to customize them to match an interior format played on a floor rather than a field. The game involved trying to knock a "duck" off the top of a huge rock by throwing another rock at it. This new version required the player to throw the rock into a raised basket. Naismith relinquished his post at the University of Kansas in 1937. He passed away on November 28, 1939, in Lawrence, Kansas. He is honored by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield.
